Design & Technology is key to developing 21st Century skills such as critical and creative thinkers by allowing students to evaluate and understand how everything around them is designed and made. At Calday Grange Grammar School students are given the opportunity to make their own choices, problem solve and build up a resilience within their own working practice, enabling them to become reflective thinkers. The subject is perfect for students who have a genuine interest in product based design or engineering and how it affects our everyday lives. Students will demonstrate their knowledge and skills, often by producing a portfolio or a physical product while working within a brief.

They will demonstrate safe working practices, while working individually and show an ability to critically evaluate and select appropriate working methods within a variety of material areas. The course includes several Design & Make projects through Year 12 and our other areas of study also include; Performance characteristics of materials, Processes and techniques, Digital technologies, Factors influencing the development of products, Effects of technological developments, Potential hazards and risk assessment, Features of manufacturing industries, Designing for maintenance and the cleaner environment, Current legislation, Information handling, Modelling and forward planning, Further processes and techniques.

We are a well equipped department, with 3 workshops and dedicated prep room offering a range of laser cutting, 3D printing and CNC routing facilities with developing links to professionals and industry. A range of extra curricular opportunities also exist such as F1 in schools and our newest development in shredding and repurposing plastic waste with our own sheet press and injection moulding facilities. Our students go on to University to study subjects including: engineering, architecture, product design, game design, teaching, construction and alike.
